Alexandre Cazes
TAP TO READ FULL NARRATIVE — ALPHA02 (800 WORDS)
AlphaBay launched in 2014, built by a 22-year-old Quebec native who called himself Alpha02 and Admin online. By July 2017, when US and international authorities shut it down, it had grown to approximately 200,000 users, 40,000 vendors, and 300,000+ product listings. It was, by every measurable dimension, the largest darknet marketplace in history — larger than Silk Road had ever been. [SOURCE: DOJ / Operation Bayonet press materials, July 2017]
It sold drugs, stolen payment card data, malware, hacking tools, counterfeit currency, and fraud services. The transaction volume exceeded $1 billion across its operating period. [SOURCE: DOJ, July 20, 2017]
Alexandre Cazes, born October 19, 1991, in Trois-Rivières, Quebec, was identified by the DOJ as the platform's creator and administrator. He had built a life that reflected the platform's revenues: he lived in Bangkok, drove a Lamborghini and a Porsche, and owned luxury property in Thailand, Cyprus, Antigua and Barbuda, and Liechtenstein. The US forfeiture complaint filed on July 19, 2017 sought upwards of $20 million in assets: four vehicles, six properties, and more than a dozen bank and cryptocurrency accounts.
He was arrested by Thai authorities on July 5, 2017, at the request of US law enforcement. He was found dead in his Thai prison cell on July 12, 2017. Thai authorities ruled the death a suicide by hanging. He was 25 years old. He had not been extradited, had not been charged in a US courtroom, and had not entered any plea or received any verdict. He was a suspect who died in custody. [SOURCE: Thai authorities; DOJ; Reuters]
The first security error was the one that broke the case. Cazes, when he first registered on a darknet forum in the early days of AlphaBay's development, used a personal email address: alpha02@yandex.com. That address was linked, through registration details, to his real identity. Investigators used this link to identify Cazes — the operator who had spent years cultivating anonymity on the platform had left his real contact information at its founding.
A second early error: in a forum post from AlphaBay's founding period, Cazes used a date of birth consistent with his actual birthdate — a detail that, combined with other metadata, helped confirm his identity.
These were early-career mistakes — the kind a 22-year-old makes when they are not yet thinking about the infrastructure they are building becoming one of the most investigated criminal networks in the world. By the time AlphaBay was at its peak, Cazes understood operational security well. The early errors were already in the record, waiting.
Operation Bayonet, the joint US-European investigation that took down AlphaBay, ran in parallel with a Dutch operation that seized control of Hansa Market — AlphaBay's next-largest competitor. The Dutch police secretly ran Hansa for approximately a month after seizing it, gathering intelligence on users who migrated to Hansa after AlphaBay closed, before they shut it down as well. The series' standard for every case is to report what the record shows, attributed to its source, without inferring beyond it.
The record shows: Cazes was arrested July 5, 2017, in Bangkok. Thai authorities held him. He was found dead in his cell on July 12, 2017. Thai authorities conducted an investigation and ruled the death a suicide by hanging. He was 25 years old. [SOURCE: Thai authorities; Reuters; DOJ statement]
No extradition had occurred. No US charges had been formally litigated. No plea had been entered. No verdict had been returned. The DOJ's charges against him were moot upon his death.
His assets — the Lamborghini, Porsche, real estate, and cryptocurrency, upwards of $20 million in all — were the subject of forfeiture proceedings. The platform was taken down. The criminal network was disrupted. The person who built it died in custody before the legal process that was designed to judge him ran its course.
This is the case as the record contains it. There is no verdict to record because there was never a verdict. There is an arrest, a death, and a seized marketplace.
