Quanta Computer (Latvian impersonation shell)
A company registered in Latvia with the same name as Quanta Computer, the Taiwanese server maker that supplied Google and Facebook.
A shell used to send fake invoices, contracts and letters on the real supplier's name so that Google and Facebook wired about $122M to accounts in Latvia and Cyprus, 2013–2015.
In 2013 Evaldas Rimasauskas registered a company in Latvia named Quanta Computer, the same as the Taiwanese hardware maker that built servers for Google and Facebook, opened bank accounts in Latvia and Cyprus, and sent the two tech giants invoices, contracts and letters bearing forged signatures and corporate seals. Their accounts-payable teams paid about $122 million between 2013 and 2015, which he moved on through Slovakia, Lithuania, Hungary and Hong Kong. Lithuanian police arrested him in March 2017; he pleaded guilty in Manhattan in March 2019 and was sentenced to five years.
No action against the shell itself. Rimasauskas pleaded guilty (March 2019) and was sentenced to 5 years with $49.7M forfeiture and $26.5M restitution (December 2019). Google and Facebook said they recovered most of the money.
